CAPITALISM vs. SOCIALISM

How interesting would it be if in 2016 the American voters got to decide once and for all what type of nation we want to be? And this year, for the first time in our recollection, that opportunity is possible.  What if Bernie Sanders turns out to be the Democrat nominee for President and he goes head-to-head with Donald Trump as the Republican nominee?

For decades now, the United States has been sliding slowly, but inexorably, into a workless entitlement society. A society where fewer and fewer support more and more. A society where those who have made this country great, economically and otherwise, are constantly disparaged by those who only insist that they are entitled to more. A society where nameless and unaccountable bureaucrats impose increasingly intolerable regulatory burdens on our governmental, economic, and social systems. A society in which our freedoms will be diminished, the country will be driven to irrational income equality. and the political class will enjoy power. In short, driving the nation toward European socialism with more and more unfettered handouts and fewer and fewer freedoms.

Who wouldn’t like a 30-hour work week, eight weeks of paid vacation, and retirement at the age of 52 with a full pension? The problem with this approach is that these utopian governments eventually run out of other peoples’ money to spend, and the whole untenable house-of-cards begins to crumble.  One need only look to the current economic status of Greece, Italy, Spain, and Portugal to see where the road to socialism ultimately leads.

Of course the policies of the Clinton, Bush, and, especially. Obama administrations have pushed the United States well down the path to European socialism. Consider, for example, the Prescription Drug Plan, Obamacare, and Obama phones.  All paid for with money we don’t have.  And the squander has only accelerated: note billions wasted on worthless “green” energy projects and start-up “green” companies.  Onerous regulations intended to drive cheap and abundant coal off the energy market and to replace it with more expensive “green” energy sources are contrary to the will of the vast majority of US citizens.  Why?  Because a socialist government always knows what is better for you than you do.

And now Bernie Sanders, who is giving Hillary Clinton a run in the Democrat primaries for her ill-gotten money, wants to kick it up a notch with more entitlement programs like free college education for all and with new policies which will take even more money from the hard-working and successful folk and give it, not just to the needy, but to anyone who would prefer to not work for a living. Bernie isn’t just a socialist; he’s working his way up to full blown communism.

And now there is the prospect of a knock-down fight for the Presidency between Donald Trump, the ultimate entrepreneur and capitalist, and Bernie Sanders, the ultimate spendthrift and European socialist. The country has been ideologically moving toward this kind of political clash for some time, so why not have it out now (hopefully once and for all)?  The hard-working entrepreneur representing America’s past and heritage pitted against the free-spending European socialist of the future.

One amusing takeaway from such a contest would be that, while Donald Trump has already written his best selling book, “The Art of the Deal,” this political clash would give Bernie the opportunity to pen his own economic tome: “The Art of the Handout.” That would actually be a pretty funny line, if the fate of our country weren’t hanging in the balance.

Naturally, as you might suspect, in a cage match between Donald and Bernie, we would be pulling for Donald and a return to our historical values, such as fiscal responsibility, military strength, and leadership in matters of foreign relations so that we can regain the respect of our international friends. Let’s also cause our foreign enemies to at least view us with a modicum of trepidation.

Of course, if you like chaos, if you would like to see our country in bankruptcy, if you would like to put an end to the Pax Americana, and if you would like to see us all prostrate before fanatics and enemies abroad – well, Bernie is just the guy for you.
